Fellowships worth $300 available for math courses in Central Nebraska
A limited number of fellowships worth $300 are available to help cover tuition for courses for teachers through the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this summer. Join your colleagues and earn 3 graduate credits in just one week! http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi
During June, two courses for secondary teachers are available in Kearney and Grand Island, respectively, to provide a superb opportunity to deepen your knowledge of mathematics and the teaching of mathematics, thereby benefiting the students you teach – and to have fun learning!
Teachers can apply online for an NMSSI Fellowship to help cover the cost of tuition. The fellowship application site is the last step in the course enrollment process, which can be found summarized in four simple steps on our web page: http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi
As follows are descriptions of the two courses that are being offered in your area this summer:
Math 812T: Geometry for Geometry Teachers (grades 9-12 teachers) will be offered at ESU 10 from June 10-14. This course (Class # 6886, Section # 596) will help strengthen your mathematical background for teaching Geometry. We will focus on fundamental concepts of Euclidean geometry, with explorations of non-Euclidean geometry for contrast. We will make extensive use of manipulatives and other dynamic geometry software.
Math 896: Seminar in Math Special Topics: Secondary-Integrated STEM (grades 7-12 teachers) will be offered in Grand Island at Walnut Middle School from June 19-21 and 24-25 (class is held Wed/Thurs/Fri/Mon/Tue). Modeled after the TEAMS grant in summer 2017, in this course (Class # 8043, Section # 596) teachers will engage in project-based learning experiences that integrate STEM in intentional and meaningful ways. Teachers also will develop the depth of content knowledge needed to implement various integrated STEM lessons in their own classrooms. In addition, the course will address effective strategies for further integration and implementation of STEM content.
For all in-person NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition reduction equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. Read more about the costs at http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2019/costs. Other courses in math and science are available in other locations around the state: http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2019/course-catalog
The Benefits of the NMSSI:
• Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a 20 percent discount on resident tuition at UNL
• Teachers can also apply for an additional tuition fellowship from the NMSSI: http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply
• Each course is worth 3 graduate credit hours at UNL
