OPS reimbursing teachers for two UNL graduate courses

For a limited time, OPS elementary teachers have the opportunity to apply for Sherwood-Lozier Fellowships to take one or two UNL courses this summer, at no cost for tuition or fees. This may be the last summer that this reimbursement is an option.

We want to bring to your attention to two excellent mathematics classes (each worth 3 graduate credit hours) designed by elementary teachers for K-5 elementary teachers and being offered in Omaha in July:

Math 803P (Class # 3204)
July 8-12
8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Algebraic Thinking for the Elementary Classroom
At UNO, Durham Science Center
Instructor: Dr. Michael Matthews of UNO

TEAC 890 (Class # 9101)
July 15-19
8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Responsive Instruction in the Elementary Mathematics Classroom
At TAC, 3215 Cuming St in Room 361 of the Career Center
Instructor: Matt Timm of OPS

Apply by July 3 for an “OPS Sherwood-Lozier Fellowship for Summer 2019” here: http://go.unl.edu/scimathapply. (Instructions for the reimbursement process can be found on the application.)

Here are some quotes from teachers who have previously taken one of these courses:

Math 803P
• I have enjoyed this class and am so excited to share what I have learned with the teachers at my school.
• I really like being able to see the connections between standards and strategies.
• I liked the place value ideas – especially introducing the vocabulary after much practice. The rounding is definitely how I’ll teach it next year!
• Working with my classmates and sharing ideas helps me see the problems more clearly. I hope this is reflected in my classroom.

TEAC 890
• I liked the work sorting. Great discussion as a whole group. Loved thinking of formative assessment as a proactive piece in classroom.
• Number lines and the connections it makes with other models is revolutionary.
• Writing out models for dividing fractions really made them more real and understandable.
• Helped me feel like the ‘oh, no, I thought I had it’ moments will happen less in front of my students!

How to Enroll in UNL Classes:
If you took a class at UNL in the past year, you are eligible to register through MyRed: http://myred.unl.edu. Instructions can be found attached. Please note that if you write down the four-digit Class Number given above, you can simply enter the Class Number in the Search box at the Shopping Cart, and that specific class will appear.

If you are NOT an active graduate student at UNL currently (active meaning you have taken a course in at least one of the past three semesters), you will need to apply to UNL as a graduate student *first* before you can register. Here is a link to the admission application: http://go.unl.edu/gradapp. Please apply as soon as possible.

Here are some notes about what to choose on the application.
• Under Admission Objective, for Start Term, select “Summer Semester 2019”
• Also under Admission Objective, select “Non-Degree, Post-Baccalaureate” as your Admission Classification.
• Please note that you will have to pay the $50 application fee.

Once you are admitted to UNL, you will register in MyRED. Look for Class Numbers 3204 for Math 803P and 9101 for TEAC 890. Keep your receipt for the $50 application fee in case OPS will reimburse you for that fee as well.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you,
Lindsay Augustyn
