Things are happening so fast in the world of politics that it is almost impossible to anticipate what we may want to talk about at the May meeting of the OLLI Politics Interest Group.
Here is a tentative list of topics, but be flexible and stay tuned to the news -- things may change:
- President Trump fires FBI Director James Comey. What's your reaction?
- The House of Representatives passes a healthcare repeal and replace measure after making changes to gain support of Freedom Caucus representatives. So now the action moves to the Senate.
- After a lot of heated discussion and a mini-revolt by a dozen conservative senators, the Unicameral passes a budget with the emergency clause attached so there will be no state shut-down. So now the ball is in the Governor's court.
- The Unicameral also turned down Governor Ricketts and Senator Jim Smith's income tax reduction plan and the bill to alter the method of valuation of rural property. This rejection immediately sparked speculation about possible opponents for Governor Ricketts in 2018.
- Local elections were held in Lincoln and Omaha. What were your reactions to the results and what if anything do the results portend for future leadership in the two cities?
