Sunday Afternoon at the Movies: "A Clockwork Orange"

Can violent tendencies be cured?
Can violent tendencies be cured?

Jumping off the overarching OLLI theme this year, “A Brave New World: How the Future Is Rooted in the Past and Present,” our Sunday afternoon movies will explore the future as seen through the eyes of filmmakers from the past.

The selected movies offer speculative, fictional science-based depictions of phenomena that were not fully accepted at the time the movies were produced. The filmmakers lead us to explore imaginative concepts, speculating about advances in science and technology. A guided discussion will follow each movie.

"A Clockwork Orange"
In an England of the future, British teenager named Alex DeLarge, leader of a gang of “droogs” that spends their evenings committing ultraviolent crimes, is apprehended by the police. Alex is convicted of rape and murder and sentenced to 14 years in prison. While incarcerated, Alex volunteers for the Ludovico procedure, a government-developed program that professes to cure him of his violent tendencies. However, government officials didn’t warn Alex that the cure might be worse than the disease. Based on a novel by Anthony Burgess.
