The priority deadline for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is April 1, 2022—here’s what you need to know about the FAFSA and why you should file asap.

What is the FAFSA?
The FAFSA application is available online at fafsa.gov and is your key to need-based financial aid like grants, loans and scholarships. You need to file the FAFSA every year, so if you're planning to attend college next year, make sure your student files their FAFSA before the April 1 priority deadline.

Financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
We encourage everyone to file the FAFSA—even if you don't think you are eligible. The FAFSA is used to determine financial need and make your student eligible for need-based aid. Since most Huskers receive at least one type of need-based financial aid after they file their FAFSA, it’s in their best interest to file soon.

Consider completing the FAFSA this weekend, or during spring break. At home, you’ll likely have access to all of the paperwork needed to complete the FAFSA.

Before you file the FAFSA—here’s how to get started:
If you’re filing the FAFSA for the first time, create a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID. Students and parents (of dependent students) are required to use an FSA ID to confirm identity when accessing financial aid information and electronically signing federal student aid documents. If you’re refiling the FAFSA, use the FSA ID you already created.

Gather the documents needed. The FAFSA asks for information about you, your financial situation, and that of your parent if you’re a dependent. View a list of information or documents you might need.
