University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration students Margo Berends of Aurora, Colo., and Anh Ha of Hanoi, Vietnam, were honored with 2013 Outstanding Student Leadership Awards by the UNL Office of Student Affairs on April 26. This award recognizes students for their outstanding leadership in academic, co-curricular and/or extracurricular activities and involvement. The recipients receive a scholarship worth approximately the cost of resident tuition for one semester during their senior year at UNL.
“One of the unique aspects of this award is it recognizes students that foster the development of leadership qualities among those around them,’ said Dr. Kathleen Farrell, senior associate dean and professor of finance at CBA. “We are very proud of the winners of the Outstanding Student Leadership Award as both are College of Business Administration students and because business education at UNL is about developing future leaders as much as it is about giving students the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. Anh and Margo are perfect examples of leaders that inspire others.”
Berends, an economics and political science major, is president of the CBA Student Advisory Board and the Honors Program Student Advisory Board. In both of these roles, she worked to build a greater sense of community by soliciting feedback from students. She serves on the Dean’s Presidents Council and as a New Student Enrollment Leader and Husker Tour Guide. She was also recently inducted into the UNL Mortar Board on March 30.
Berends hopes to continue her studies with a master’s in public policy. She is a Truman Scholarship Finalist, which recognizes and provides financial support for graduate study for students who are committed to making a difference through public service.
Continuing her commitment to public service, she is interning this summer at the Institute of International Education in Washington, D.C., and received one of ten UNL Career Services’ 2013 internship scholarships for this experience.
Ha, an economics and management major, has served CBA in his presidency of the Multicultural Business Student Association (MSBA) for two years and through the Dean’s Presidents Council. Under his leadership, the MSBA has increased membership by 500 percent and collaborated with Career Services to have a successful annual Professional Networking Reception.
Ha has been very involved in Enactus, a student organization based out of CBA where entrepreneurial efforts are used to fund outreach programs that help local, national and global communities. With Enactus, he has served in roles of a student worker at the student-run Daily Drip and director of the human resource committee for the LisaMom Foundation, an Enactus project.
He has also assisted in research, including the Nebraska Economic Conditions Survey, with the Bureau of Business Research as an undergraduate research assistant.
In addition to the two recipients, four finalists and fourteen semi-finalists were selected from all of the nominations by a committee on behalf of the Office of Student Affairs. The finalists were: Courtney Casper, a management and family science major from Papillion, Neb.; John-Emmett Mahon, a biological sciences (pre-med) major from South Sioux City, Neb.; Ellen Muehling, an international business, global studies, psychology and Latin American studies major from Lincoln, Neb.; and Moses Pacheco, a Civil Engineering major from Dakota City, Neb. The semi-finalists were: Colby Argo, a biological science and poligical science major from Liberty, Neb.; Sara Benning, an actuarial science major from Brookfield, Wis.; Ian Chapo, an economics and political science major from Lincoln, Neb.; Grant Fehr, a marketing and secondary business education major from Omaha, Neb.; Sujey Gomez, a management and marketing major from Dakota City, Neb.; Francisco Gomez-Mancillas, a finance and international business major from Lincoln, Neb.; Evan Ibach, an animal science major from Sumner, Neb.; Kate Kollars, a biological sciences and anthropology major from Sioux City, Iowa; Emily Miller, an industrial engineering major from Lenexa, Kan.; Allison Morton, a psychology major from Lincoln, Neb.; Jamie Porter, a psychology and Spanish major from Omaha, Neb.; Marnee Roundtree, a psychology major from Parks, Neb.; Konrad Siebert, a finance major from Lake Forest, Ill.; and James Verhoeff, a marketing and management major from Cortland, Neb.
