Getting Involved is Key to Living in the Residence Halls

Your student is living in a residence hall. Now what?

The most important thing your student can do is get involved right away. If your student calls home and says there isn’t anything to do, tell them about hall floor events, the Party at the Union, Party at the Rec Center and other Big Red Welcome events. Suggest he or she talk to the floor Resident Assistant (RA) about events happening in the halls and around campus.

Some important dates to remember:
• After August 1, log into MyRed and sign up for a one-hour unloading zone. You must have a scheduled unload time.
• Traditional move-in is Thurs., Aug. 21 and Fri., Aug. 22. Visit http://housing.unl.edu/move for hall-specific instructions.
• Download the GUIDEBOOK Move-In app for all the move-in information in one easy location. http://go.unl.edu/guidebook.

Once you’re here:
• Get involved. There will be a lot of events happening before semester begins. Visit http://bigredwelcome.unl.edu
• Thurs., Aug. 21, RHA (Residence Hall Association) is hosting “Bingo and Blankets” in the Nebraska Union Ballroom from 8-11 p.m. Plenty of food, fun and prizes will be provided free to all students.

If your student enjoys planning activities and events, encourage them to get involved in RHA. Each residence hall has a hall government which works to plan programs and events for the students living in the halls. RHA also works on hall improvements and other initiatives in the buildings. It’s a fun way to meet other students in the building, build leadership skills, and be a part of some awesome hall pride! Elections are on Thurs., Sept. 4. Encourage your student to talk to his or her RA to join.

The residence hall staff and our student leaders are excited to welcome your student to campus! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact our office. We want to make you and your student’s experience with the residence halls a positive one in which they will make many of their lifetime college memories.
