With the start of a new year, thoughts naturally turn to setting resolutions. As parents, you can take advantage of this time to engage in a conversation with your student reflecting on the fall semester and planning for academic success in the spring.
Here are some questions to consider when talking with your student:
• Did you use a calendar/planning system consistently to stay on top of assignments, tests, and papers? What improvements might you make for spring?
• How did you prepare for quizzes and exams? What changes will you make for spring?
• How is your note taking system working? Are there ways to be more efficient?
• How have you structured your time to accommodate reading assignments and preparations for each course? In what environment are you most able to conduct reading assignments in order to comprehend the material?
• Are you getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising?
• Have you taken advantage of the academic resources at UNL?
UNL provides many resources to help students start the term off on the right foot and to maintain an effective success plan.
The First-Year Experience and Transition Programs office provides one-on-one academic coaching for undergraduates. Students can call, walk-in, or setup an appointment online via MyPlan. Coaches are available to assist with time management or study skills and to recommend workshops and resources on a multitude of topics.
Two popular academic support resources are the Study Stops and department resource centers. Study Stop offer free subject consultants and a supportive plan to study alone or with peers. Free tutoring is also available to students through departmental resource centers for biology, chemistry, math, physics, writing, modern languages, and computer science and engineering.
During winter break, take a minute to check-in with your student, offer support, and point your student in the direction of these resources.
