Mid-terms are around the corner

As we reach the midpoint of the semester, most students have taken their first big exam or have had to turn in their first big project. As Advisors, we encourage parents to check-in with their student regarding assignments, exams, and other mid-term grade progress. Students may be anxious about their mid-term exams or projects and it’s a good point of the year to check-in and make adjustments to their study habits or course work if necessary.

If your student needs additional support, encourage them to first meet with the course instructor and then their academic advisor. Additionally, there are plenty of resources provided across campus to help your student be successful. Many departments around campus such as Math, Chemistry, Physics and the Writing Center have specific resource centers staffed with tutors to help students throughout the day. The Office of First Year Experience and Transitions (FYE) and the Office of Academic Success and Intercultural Services (OASIS) offer Study Stops at convenient locations across campus on evenings and weekends: http://go.unl.edu/4xf3 . FYE has compiled a list of various campus resources: http://go.unl.edu/58np In addition to these resources, please encourage your student to attend their professors’ office hours to develop better relationships with their faculty and to ask questions as they arise.

As your student looks ahead to spring semester, priority registration dates for Spring 2016 are October 26 – November 10. On October 5th, each student will be assigned a unique date and time to enroll in classes for the Spring 2016 semester, which is made available on your student’s MyRED under “Message Center”. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor prior to this unique date so they can enroll in appropriate classes as soon as possible. Also students should check with their departments and mentoring programs to see if there are special registration requirements. Encourage your student to plan ahead and meet with their academic advisor early and often.
