Stay on Track With Summer Classes

Summer classes begin May 16.
Summer classes begin May 16.

Does your student have summer plans in place? He or she might want to consider summer sessions. UNL offers a variety of courses, both online and on campus. Taking courses over the summer can be a great way to catch up if your student took a lighter load this past academic year or get ahead if they intend to change majors, add a minor, or alter their academic plan in some way. There are several different sessions available (one session is as short as three weeks), so even if your student prefers lecture based classes rather than online, he or she would not need to be in town for the entire summer. The summer calendar is available online.

If UNL classes are not an option, it is possible for your student to complete some requirements over the summer at home. Students can use an online tool called Transferology to explore how courses from other institutions might transfer to UNL. Students should consult with with their academic advisor to make certain a course will count towards their specific major before summer enrollment.

Another summer option to consider is a summer education abroad experience. For some students, taking an entire semester to study abroad is not feasible but they would still like to have an education abroad experience. Summer might be an outstanding time to accomplish this goal. There are scholarships available to help offset the costs of education abroad, but students need to begin planning early. If your student is interested, encourage them to visit the Education Abroad Office in 110 Love South or online. Students are also encouraged to visit with their academic advisor about the best time to go abroad and what courses might transfer back to their UNL degree.

Summer registration at UNL is currently underway, so please encourage your student to talk with an academic advisor if they have questions about adding summer courses to their academic plan.
