Career conversation starters

Join your student in their career journey this summer.

With a break from classes, clubs, and other college activities, summer can be a great time for your student to think through career options and goals. Join in their process by starting a conversation. Here are some easy prompts to open up these discussions:
What are you learning in your summer job?
What do you enjoy (and not enjoy) about that job?
Have you ever thought about shadowing someone in [field of interest]? We could brainstorm who we know in that field.
What do you want to do next?
Career coaches and advisors are available over the summer at UNL. Would you like to connect with one?

Such a conversation can lead to developing career goals. If your student has a career in mind, what are the steps necessary to get there? If not, what steps will help them make some career decisions? The Career Services staff is available to help your student develop these plans through personal coaching, assessments, and design strategies. In addition to Career Services, many Nebraska colleges have career focused staff available to help their students through career related concerns. Not sure who to connect with? University Career Services can connect you to the appropriate resources and services on campus.

Before your student returns to classes, clubs, and the demands of focusing on their education full-time, help them identify where they are at and where they want to go in their career. Summer is the perfect time for it!
