Renee Sans Souci: Line 3 and the Fight for Climate Justice

Sustain UNL is proud to host Renee Sans Souci on November 4 at 7:00 pm in the Nebraska Union (Foodcourt Room C/D) for our upcoming event: Line 3 and the Fight for Climate Justice. Renee, an active member in Lincoln and Nebraska’s advocacy communities, will share her experience protesting the Line 3 pipeline in Minnesota, how it relates to climate justice and what Nebraskans can do to support the cause.

Sustain UNL is a student-led environmental organization dedicated to creating a sustainable world through activism, education, and service-engagement. This year, our members voted on the uniting theme to focus our actions, education and service on climate justice. To us, climate justice means supporting and fighting for marginalized communities that have historically and continue to be disproportionately affected by the climate crisis. It means listening and amplifying those voices and taking action to make a more equitable and sustainable world.

Line 3 and the Fight for Climate Justice is not only an opportunity to educate our members, but our campus as a whole about climate justice and an environmental issue that is close to many Nebraskans. In January, President Biden blocked plans to finish the Keystone XL pipeline, an environmental issue that captured the attention and livelihoods of Nebraskans for decades. Now, Indigenous people in Minnesota are dealing with a similar threat to their natural resources and livelihood with the Line 3 pipeline, but there seems to be little conversation or action coming from Nebraska. We hope to change that with this event.

With a degree in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and being an Umonhon woman and practitioner of traditional healing, Renee Sans Souci combines her life experiences with a learning process that helps learners to engage in their own cultural identities and languages. Sustain UNL is honored to have Renee come and share her experiences protesting in Minnesota and what climate justice means to her.

We welcome UNL students, faculty and members of the community to this event to learn more about Line 3 and what we can do here in Nebraska. Masks are required and a Zoom link is available for those not able to attend in person. For more information, please reach Sustain UNL at sustainunl@gmail.com.
