In today’s rapidly evolving world, leadership, innovation, and inclusive excellence are no longer separate entities but intertwined forces driving positive change. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Institute for Inclusive Innovation (I-3), housed within the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, is cultivating the next generation of leaders equipped to navigate this complex landscape.
This dynamic leadership cohort program has just empowered an inaugural cohort of upperclass students by providing them with a transformative journey of learning and real-world application.
The I-3 program offers a comprehensive one-year experience, spanning the fall and spring semesters, designed to equip participants with invaluable skills and insights. The fall semester kicked off with a robust ten-week immersive experience, delving into critical topics such as cultural intelligence (CQ), perspective-taking, communication, inclusive leadership, creativity, branding, entrepreneurship, and more. This diverse curriculum ensured students gain a holistic understanding of the interconnectedness of these concepts. Tailored interactive sessions, delivered by industry professionals, provided students with practical tools and strategies applicable to a wide range of fields. “Many of the speakers shared great tools and strategies for creative thinking, emphasizing that it doesn’t have to be complex,” shared Jessica Wynne, an I-3 student.“I found all of these insights incredibly helpful, and I’ve been applying them to areas I’ve been struggling with lately. They’ve been valuable reminders and have made a real difference for me.”
“One key insight from the I-3 program that I will carry with me as a leader, innovator, and advocate for DEI is the importance of creating inclusive environments where diverse perspectives are actively pursued and valued,” reflected Mohammed Karkoosh.
A key component of the I-3 program is its emphasis on experiential learning. During the spring semester, students transition from classroom learning to real-world application through internships working specialized projects tailored to their individual interests and career aspirations. The I-3 program partners with various organizations, matching students based on their interests, majors, and career goals. This ensures that each student gains relevant and valuable experience. These placements cover a broad spectrum of career fields, from arts and entertainment to healthcare and tech, demonstrating the program's wide reach and impact.
This hands-on experience allows students to put the I-3 principles—innovation, leadership, and inclusive excellence—into practice. This immersive phase offers several pathways for learning, such as inclusive innovation projects within organizations, CEO or entrepreneur mentorships, and tailored leadership or innovation projects. This flexibility allows students to tailor their experience to their specific needs and goals. “I will take with me how closely innovation and DEI knowledge are connected and what I can do with a creative and open mind to truly leave an impact on communities,” said Caroline Smith. She further added, “I think this program will open the door for a lot of students to understand the correlation between DEI knowledge and better workplace environments.”
The I-3 program culminates in a spring showcase where students will present their work, followed by a completion ceremony where they will receive their I-3 certificates. This celebration marks the end of their formal participation in the program but the beginning of their journey as empowered leaders. “The I-3 program is an incredible experience that not only prepares the next cohort of leaders but also inspires them. Students have a great support system and educational opportunities while simultaneously networking with professionals,” shared Jathesn Xretqalin calling the I-3 program as “the most amazing program she has ever participated in.”
The Institute for Inclusive Innovation is not just a program; it's an investment in the future. By fostering leadership, innovation, and inclusive excellence, I-3 is empowering UNL students to become the change-makers the world needs.
Applications for the 2025-2026 academic year cohort will open in March.
