Strength of the Month: Command

Each month we’ll be highlighting one of the 34 Clifton Strengths themes. We hope that by gaining a better understanding your team member’s strengths, as well as your own, your RSO can thrive! This month’s highlighted theme is: Command

Command leads people to take charge. Unlike others, people with Command feel no discomfort with imposing their views on others. On the contrary, once their opinion is formed, they need to share it with others. Once their goal is set, they feel restless until they have aligned others with themselves. Commands are not frightened by confrontation; rather, they know that confrontation is the first step toward resolution.

Whereas others may avoid facing up to life's unpleasantness, Commands feel compelled to present the facts or the truth, no matter how unpleasant it may be. They need things to be clear between people and challenge them to be clear-eyed and honest. They push them to take risks, and may even intimidate others. And while some may resent this, labeling them opinionated, they often willingly hand Commands the reins. People are drawn toward those who take a stance and ask them to move in a certain direction. Therefore, people will be drawn to them. They have presence. They have Command.

Tips For Advising Someone Who Leads Through The Command Talent:
• As much as you can, give this person room to lead and make decisions.
• When confronting this person, take firm action.
• This person may intimidate others with their upfront, assertive style. Rather than pushing them to learn how to be empathetic and polite, you might make better use of your time by helping others understand their assertiveness – as long as they don’t become aggressive or offensive.
