Fall Course, HRHA 191: The Rights of the Child

HRHA 191
HRHA 191

We begin with the history and implications of the
claim that children have rights, and then explore challenges
and opportunities in promoting the rights of the child. We
explore a vast array of children’s rights issues, including
some you may have heard about already, like gun violence or
domestic abuse, and others that you may have never
considered, like climate change, birth registration, and many
more. This course is meant for anyone interested in working
with children, having children, or who was once a child.

The course counts for credit in the Human Rights and
Humanitarian Affairs (HRHA) minor, and is a great course if
you're considering an HRHA minor but haven't declared yet.
Coursework will consistent of regular reading, highly
participatory active learning class sessions, two short papers,
five reading reflections, and an end-of-semester project with
an accompanying presentation. Throughout, we will
emphasize organizational and time management skills that
will help you succeed in this class and beyond, and ways to
apply what you learn in this class to your life beyond the
classroom.
