Favorite book and why: Currently, my favorite book is The Kitchen Dweller’s Testimony by Ladan Osman. The collection of poems addresses a wide range of social issues and internal struggles, yet it is so inquisitive and effortless. Last year, I had the pleasure of meeting the author at a UNL event on African Poetry.

Favorite movie and why: I enjoy many movies, but the Disney films I watched growing up, like Jump In! and Let it Shine, always reminds me of my childhood!

Why these majors and minors?
My Sudanese heritage, along with my experiences visiting the country, inspired my passion for human rights. I witnessed my family members and the people of my homeland suffering from several issues, such as poverty, political turmoil, and the effects of the Darfur genocide. I began to question humanity, and I became increasingly curious about the world.

Upon entering college, I chose Global Studies to satisfy my curiosity, and because its interdisciplinary model is pertinent to analyzing the complexity of the world. I decided to major in Computer Science after developing an interest in coding the summer before classes began. Although these fields are quite different, the knowledge I gain from both humanities and STEM has enhanced my skills for a future career in human rights law and technology. Additionally, I chose a minor in Arabic Studies to deepen my knowledge of the language and the culture of the Middle East and North Africa. This knowledge only enhances my ability to help those living in the region.

Introduction to Global Studies (GLST 201) with Dr. Julia Reilly has consistently been one of the most beneficial classes I have taken. The course affirmed my decision to major in Global Studies and broadened my understanding of various global issues, including how technology can both advance and violate human rights. It piqued my curiosity and helped align my interests with a career path.

It is important to appreciate introductory courses because they can either deepen your interests or guide you toward a more suitable path for your future. I also recommend taking advantage of the academic flexibility within the Global Studies major, as it allows you to tailor your coursework to your interests. Lastly, the best college advice I have ever received is to be open. I never imagined pursuing this academic and professional path but remaining open to new possibilities led me to discover interests I had not previously considered.

Extra-curricular experiences:
This summer, I was fortunate to have studied abroad in Morocco for ten weeks. I stayed with a host family in Meknes while taking rigorous courses in international and Arabic studies. When I was not studying, I had the opportunity to hike through the Atlas Mountains, visit the Roman ruins in Volubilis, and ride a camel through the desert. I was introduced to Darija, the colloquial language, met new people, and tried new activities, such as embroidery. I loved learning the history and culture of Morocco throughout my experience. My studies and exploration of Morocco enhanced my understanding and appreciation for the region, and it heightened my desire to pursue a career that allows me to work internationally. I would highly recommend studying abroad to all students, even if it is not an academic requirement. I studied abroad to broaden my worldview, and I am grateful that the experience allowed me to evolve not only as a student but as an individual.

Additionally, I currently serve as a Hearing Board member of the University Conduct Board. With my interest in law, this role stood out to me. I have engaged in the University of Nebraska's conduct process by reviewing conduct cases, asking questions about the information presented, and discussing with staff and faculty members to determine whether a violation of the Student Code of Conduct has occurred. This invaluable experience has helped me develop skills such as logical reasoning and critical thinking while promoting the safety of our campus community.

Post-Graduation Plans:
I am interested in pursuing law school to study international law. I aim to use law and technology to advance human rights around the world, particularly concerning war, genocide, and mass displacement. The ongoing civil war in Sudan, which has caused widespread devastation, has further strengthened this interest. I hope to find a program that aligns with all my professional interests, but I am staying open to various opportunities and experiences that may arise along the way!
