The School of Global Integrative Studies is pleased to offer a new advanced undergraduate course this spring: Development in Theory and Practice (ANTH/GLST 474/874), taught by Sarah Atwood Barma. With more than two decades of experience managing multi-stakeholder development investments and strategic partnerships across the Middle East and Africa, Sarah brings a wealth of real-world insight into the classroom.
This course will combine rigorous theoretical frameworks (from economics, politics, sociology, and geography) with applied case studies, fieldwork simulations, and interactive project engagements. Students will not only learn about classic and contemporary development paradigms, but also critically examine how development practice happens on the ground, the successes, the challenges, the trade-offs, as well as how the current development landscape is changing.
Open to all majors and everyone curious about making a difference, ANTH/GLST 474/874 offers a unique opportunity to bridge academic study with career-relevant skills in the global development field. Interested students should register soon.
We look forward to seeing students engage deeply with the “why” and “how” of development in a truly meaningful way.
