Meet Geography Major, Aaron Hinz! Aaron is graduating this week and is excited to incorporate geospatial disciplines in his career!

Hometown: Hebron Nebraska
Year at UNL: 4th year (Senior)
Favorite book(s) and why:
The Expanse (novel series) by James S. A. Corey
Not the first series I’ve completed but my most favorite (9 total books with 10 short stories/novellas). I started the series and just had to finish it.
I think it’s an interesting representation of what humanity could potentially become in the future.

Favorite movie and why.
Jurassic Park
Grew up loving dinosaurs. One of the first movies I saw in theaters when I was really young.

Why are you studying your chosen major?
I’ve always been fascinated by physical geography and maps. Growing up I would sit at the kitchen table and just look through maps of the world. Learning where places were and how to get there. I also enjoy understanding maps of fantasy worlds, for example the Fellowships journey to destroy the ring in Mordor. I was curious to see the route the Fellowship took.

What are some of the best/most interesting classes you’ve taken? What are your suggestions for new/other majors? Also, why should someone in another major choose your major?
Biogeography was interesting because you got to learn and understand where and why things are in a geographical setting. Why do certain plants grow at certain altitudes or why a particular species of birds use plants to catch their food.
GIS classes are also great for people who want to sharpen their technical skills.
I think most people forget how well geography can go with many different majors. Geography helps people understand space and place and can really open one’s perspective on where things truly are in the world.

What are your post-graduation plans?
I plan on starting my career (depending on where I get hired). My ideal career would be doing something while incorporating geospatial disciplines. Something involving being outdoors and exploring the world. I’m still trying to figure out what that would be but hopefully something comes around.
