Why Global Studies: Growing up in San Diego, I was introduced to diversity from a young age. I soon learned to respect and treasure my peers based on this and wanted to dive further into these types of relationships. After traveling to London a couple years ago, my international perspective widened and I soon realized how much more there was to learn about the world and its diversity of people. I originally started off at UNL as an International Business student but soon realized that my strengths were not held in the aspects of business in the world but rather the politics and relations held between those of different cultures.

For new Global Studies majors, I believe it is important to not be afraid to take a class or take interest in a topic that you may not have considered prior to college. This is truly a time to widen your scope on the world and to open yourself up to new beliefs and ideas. Never be close-minded. Also, begin looking into study abroad experiences early in order to not fall behind and miss deadlines!

International Experiences: Although I have not yet studied abroad, I recently returned from a Summer trip in Italy and found it to be one of the most life-changing experiences to date. Having visited Rome, Tuscany, Pompeii, Sorrento, and Florence, I was able to truly understand how much larger our world is than what we expect. Within one country I was able to find such a diversity of culture and traditions and this will only carry out as I travel more. If I was to live by one quote it would be “Just go”. Do not be afraid to travel abroad (whether it be for pleasure or academics) due to language barriers, homesickness, etc.. Just go.

Post-Graduate Plans: Once receiving my diploma, I hope to continue to a graduate school abroad studying International Peace and Security. I would like to eventually work under the Peace Corps or as diplomat whilst working for the non-profit group “Pencils of Promise” whom go to third world countries and build schools and equip teachers. This being said, the future can change at any moment and my path may be altered, and because of that I will always keep my options open to future endeavors.
