As a City Year AmeriCorps member, you’ll not only make a measurable impact in the lives of the students and communities you serve, but you’ll grow as an individual, too.
During your 11 months of full-time service in high-need public schools, you’ll develop leadership and professional skills that will help you advance in your career after City Year—whether you choose to go into business, entrepreneurship, medicine, social work or education, to name a few.
As a City Year AmeriCorps member, you'll spend 11 months serving hands-on with students, supporting them both inside and outside of the classroom. You will play a pivotal role in helping them reach graduation and beyond.
Total Compensation and Funding
For your 11-month commitment, you’ll receive an education award, be eligible to receive scholarships at leading colleges and graduate schools and be compensated through a living stipend and health insurance benefits.
Living Stipend and Living Expenses
City Year provides a modest living stipend of $564 bi-weekly and health insurance. Many AmeriCorps members stretch their stipend dollars by sharing housing with other AmeriCorps members, making shared meals and taking advantage of varied local partnerships at City Year sites such as transporation passes or special AmeriCorps member discounts. Uniform parts are provided by Aramark and bags are provided by Timbuk2.
AmeriCorps Educational Funding
As a member of the federal AmeriCorps program, you are eligible to earn the Segal Education Award (valued at $5,734) at the completion of your service year, which can go toward pursuing further education or to pay off existing, qualified student loans. Additionally, over 100 colleges and universities nationwide augment the Segal Education Award in some way, including matching your award amount, waived registration fees, course credits, or service scholarships.
During your service with us, you can request that qualified federal student loans be put into forbearance. Upon successful completion of your term, you may also request the accrued interest be paid by the National Service Trust, federal administrator for AmeriCorps’ education benefits.
Higher Education Scholarships
In addition to the benefits you receive as a member of AmeriCorps, City Year partners with more than 90 leading colleges and universities to provide scholarships at the graduate and undergraduate level to our alums. Each year, over $3 million dollars are available in scholarships exclusively to City Year alums, in a wide range of programs including education, public policy, social work, business, and public health.
