Do you want to help other students? Are you interested in teaching or tutoring? Would you like to meet people from diverse backgrounds and cultures? If you answered yes to one or all of these questions, then volunteering once a week for UNL’s IEP program might be right for you.
UNL’s Programs in English as a Second Language (PIESL) department is in need of native English speakers to hold conversations with Intensive English Program (IEP) students once weekly. All you need to do is show up and chat with an international student for about one hour per week. If you’d like to do more, then the IEP club could also use your help. The IEP club exists for international students in IEP to practice English outside of the classroom through fun group activities and excursions. If you have a few hours once every two weeks to meet with the club and participate in club activities, you could help several students take their English abilities to new levels! You could learn more about another culture, make a new friend, or just have fun.
Volunteering with the IEP program could give you necessary community service hours, experience with which to jump start to your ESL teaching career, or a means to expand your horizons!
