HIST 262, Russia: 19th Century to Present

This course covers the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union from the mid-1800’s to the present day. We will discuss issues like nationalism, socialism and imperialism in the context of 19th century Europe and how Russian leaders and people responded to these challenges. We will cover the two world wars, the Russian revolutions of 1917, and the formation of the Soviet Union. The Soviet experience will be a key focus, as will the collapse of the USSR in 1991. We will wrap up with consideration of the Russian Federation since 1991 and its influence in the region (the post-Soviet space) and in the world.
