Majors: Global Studies, History, Political Science
Minors: Ethnic Studies, African Studies, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs
Year of graduation: 2015
Hometown: Kearney, NE

What have you been up to since graduation?
I have been teaching English in Shanghai, China and traveling around Asia as much as possible.

What were your favorite courses and activities while at UNL?
My favorite activity at UNL was marching band. I was in the Cornhusker Marching Band for four years and the sense of community and accomplishment I gained from being part of such an organization was unparalleled.

Some of my favorite courses at UNL were HIST 459 – Women and Gender in Africa with Dr. Dawne Curry, POLS 470 – International Human Rights with Dr. Courtney Hillebrecht and POLS 338 – Women & Politics with Dr. Alice Kang. All three classes were fascinating studies on various aspects of gender, history and politics with three amazing professors.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
I will have a postgraduate degree in Education, so I would like to be working in international education, preferably with an NGO or governmental organization that works to bring education to those with limited access due to poverty or societal views. I also want to continue to travel as much as possible.

Advice for current Global Studies majors and minors:
Work abroad for at least a year! If you’re interested in anything global, nothing can help you more than learning to adapt and work within a culture other than your own. You’ll learn a lot about yourself and how you view the world and the way people think. The experience you will gain is unbeatable, and plus it will look great on your resume.
