GRADUATING SENIORS: Apply to become part of American Voices Project Research Fellowship!
American Voices Project is now recruiting a select group of research fellows to become part of this study. The fellows will receive intensive training and then visit communities across America to talk with families about their lives, hopes, and dreams. It’s not a survey, it’s not a poll, but an honest and open conversation that we’re holding in all 50 states. This is a paid position with health benefits.
The fellows will then learn how to analyze the interviews with the latest data science methods, identify the country’s emerging problems, and begin the task of building 21st-century policy that responds to the voices of the people. It will be a life-changing experience that prepares the next generation of leaders in academia, government, politics, nonprofits, and beyond.
Training Institute | Summer 2019
The fellowship starts with an intensive training regimen in which fellows receive an introduction to the relevant social science and public policy research, specialized training in qualitative interviewing and survey methodology, and a nuts-and-bolts discussion of the challenges of field research. The training institute will combine classroom sessions with field practice, with each fellow receiving personalized feedback on recruiting strategies, interviewing techniques, and more. The American Voices Training Institute is led by Princeton University professor Kathryn Edin, one of the country’s leading qualitative researchers.
Fieldwork
Research fellows will then spend a year in communities throughout the 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and native nations. Fellows will be responsible for visiting selected households, conducting interviews, attending community meetings, collecting information on participant demographics and expenses, and writing field reports. Fellows will work in pairs and will rotate through several different locations over the course of the year.
Data Science Institute | Summer 2020
At the end of fieldwork period, fellows will reconvene for training in how to analyze the survey, conversational, and experimental data they’ve collected. The Data Science Institute will be led by top professors from Princeton University, Stanford University, and Harvard University.
