Favorite Book:
I read on a daily basis so it is difficult to choose a favorite, but of my favorites I really loved Origin, by Jessica Khoury. It is a simple, fictional love story that I read years ago and still remember today. It has a bittersweet ending and even though I have never cried, I nearly shed a tear for this one.
Favorite Movie:
I don’t watch a lot of television, and I watch more TV shows than movies, most of which is foreign. However, I really enjoyed Он – драко́н (I Am Dragon), a fictional Russian movie about a girl who comes to love a dragon. In a way, it is similar to Beauty and the Beast. I love the character development in the movie because it shows that there is not only one side to a person.
Why Global Studies?
I chose Global Studies because Linguistics was not available as a major. In the end, I found that Global Studies is a better fit because it allows me to explore more than just the languages. I can learn about the cultures, interactions between countries of the world, and gain a more well-rounded education. Of course, my favorite class is Chinese, simply because I am learning a language. I would highly recommend taking the class.
Education Abroad Plans:
While I have not studied abroad yet, this past winter break I had the opportunity to visit China for two weeks, where I made new friends, toured Chengdu and Beijing, and enjoyed lots of traditional food. Even though it wasn’t a study abroad experience, I certainly hope to either return to Chengdu or travel to Japan or South Korea to study in the next few years.
Post-Graduation Plans:
Since I love languages, I want to go into the field of translation, but at the moment I am unsure of how I will get there. I am contemplating graduate school, but as I am still a first-year, things are up in the air for now.
