Spring 2020 Course: REGL 381 - When the World's Religions Came to Lincoln

RELG 381: When the World's Religions Came to Lincoln

Do you want to discover how Lincoln became home to thousands of immigrants and refugees from 40 countries around the world? Do you want to explore how these new Americans have adapted their religious traditions to life in Lincoln?

If so, Spring 2020 join us for this brand new course that will chronicle the ever-changing religious landscape of Lincoln. We will focus on how new Americans—from Bosnia, Vietnam, Mexico, Sudan, Thailand, Syria, Iraq (among many others)—built new homes, new businesses, new places of worship, and new identities in America’s Great Plains.

We won’t just be studying history. We will be making our own. The university is working to identify a space on campus where Huskers can gather to worship, to meditate, and to discuss with fellow Huskers of different
backgrounds to see what we have in common and what makes our traditions different.

At the end of the term, you will produce a “white paper” that outlines the needs of the diverse religious communities on campus for such a space. This white paper will also propose “best practices” to ensure that this new space is welcoming and inclusive to all.
