Matt Haugen, an M.S. candidate at SNR, was recently awarded a prestigious $4,000 scholarship by the Shikar Safari Club in Texas.
For his thesis, Matt is investigating 40 years of data collected from hunters who send wings from harvested ducks to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His work will provide information to harvest managers who set season lengths and bag limits of waterfowl in North America. He is supervised by Mark Vrtiska (Nebraska Game and Parks Commission) and Larkin Powell.
The Safari Club annually funds scholarships for students across the U.S. who are engaged in studies of Wildlife Management or Range Management.
Students must be upper-level undergrads or graduate students, with an understanding of the value of hunting on wildlife and land management. They must be active hunters with GPAs greater than 3.0 and good leadership abilities.
Scott Hygnstrom is the SNR contact with the Shikar Safari Club, and he has successfully facilitated several SNR students who have received this award over the past few years. SNR faculty initially select which students to nominate for this award.
