A range of film festivals showcase documentaries focusing on the natural world, and two such films produced by the Platte Basin Timelapse project — “High Plains Wild” and “Counting Cranes” — have been selected as official entries in various festivals. “High Plains Wild,” examining the reintroduction of bighorn sheep in Nebraska’s Wildcat Hills and conservation work to sustain the population, last year received two film festival awards.

The Wild and Working Lands Film Festival honored “High Plains Wild” with its Migration Initiative Award. The film was third runner-up in the YaleEnvironment360 Film Contest.

In addition, “High Plains Wild” was an official selection in 2022 for the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival and the S.O.F.A Film Festival. In 2023, it has been selected for the Colorado Environmental Film Festival, Wild and Scenic Film Festival and Dam Short Film Festival.

Grant Reiner, a producer with Platte Basin Timelapse, was featured in the film as he documented wildlife in the Wildcat Hills in working toward a Master of Science in Applied Science from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Natural Resources. His mentor for the project was Michael Forsberg, a conservation photographer and research assistant professor in SNR who has been doing work in the Wildcat Hills for years.
