John Lenters, an associate professor at the School of Natural Resources, played a prominent role in a recent article in Water Currents, a news blog on the National Geographic website.

The Nov. 20 article—written by Lisa Borre—cited Lenters' research to paint an alarming picture about water levels in the Great Lakes region, and Lake Superior in particular. Lenters is a lake and climate scientist who focuses his research on the effects of climate change on lakes around the world, including the Great Lakes.

"Lake Superior's rapid warming is like a canary in the coal mine," Lenters told Borre. "We’re seeing changes in ice cover, water temperature, and evaporation that indicate major shifts are underway on the world's largest lake."
