“Learning from natural immunity to HIV-1: developing effective vaccine and identifying novel target for HIV-1 prevention and treatment,” will be presented by Dr. Ma Luo, University of Manitoba/National Microbiology Laboratory. Within a population there is heterogeneity in susceptibility to infection and infectious disease. Heterogeneity in response to HIV-1 infection and disease has also been observed in different populations. Pumwani sex worker cohort was established in 1985 in Naitobi, Kenya and a subgroup of sex workers remain HIV-1 uninfected despite repeated exposure through high risk sex work. By understanding the mechnism protecting them from HIV-1 infection we have developed a novel HIV vaccine approach and identified novel targets to prevent HIV-1 infection. A proof of concept vaccine study has shown promising results and potential novel prevention/treatment mesures could also be developed.
The seminar begins at 4:00 p.m., preceded by a reception at 3:30 p.m. The seminar is free and open to the public. The Beadle Center is located at 1901 Vine Street. The complete schedule of seminars may be found at http://biotech.unl.edu/
