Two participants high five during the 2023 Innovation Challenge.

This year's Innovation Challenge focuses on "subtractive innovation", a concept that encourages creativity by focusing on what can be eliminated to improve functionality, user experience or cost efficiency. You will be challenged to share what value you add by removing an element, feature or step in a process.

Inventor Ryan McFarland removed the peddles from a typical bicycle to provide a safe and developmentally appropriate way for kids to learn how to ride a bike. The Strider bike encourages kids to learn how to balance while using their feet to propel the bike forward.

Apple's wireless AirPods allow users to do more with less via bluetooth connectivity.

Dyson's bagless vacuum removed the need for disposable vacuum bags, creating a more efficient and environmentally friendly vacuum cleaner.

Have a solution for something that is over-engineered? Know of a process that has too many steps? Have a product that has too many features? Share your creative solution at the Innovation Challenge on Friday, September 13.

During the challenge, you and your fellow competitors will learn from local entrepreneur, Kendall Warnock, owner of A1 Automotive, as he shares how his company remains innovative through market changes and emerging competition. In addition, you will participate in the Entrepreneurship at Nebraska Innovation Hunt, where you will explore entrepreneurial resources and opportunities available on campus.

Following lunch, you and your teammates will have work time to craft and polish your pitch for your creative solution. Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship faculty and staff will be available to help.

The challenge will conclude with participant pitches and announcement of winning teams.
