Abby is the newest member of the CAST team. As a program coordinator with CAST, Abby supports transfer students and aims to help students make the most of their time at UNL.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself!
I am a plant-loving pet parent originally from Kansas! In my free time, I like to read, play board games, and paint.
What is your role at CAST?
My role as a Program Coordinator in CAST allows me to support students in a number of ways! In addition to academic success coaching, I coordinate various programs (my title is program coordinator, after all). This work includes our Transfer Student engagement, Study Stop tutoring services, and other campus-collaborative events.
What drew you to working with college students?
I love working with college students because of the momentum that's available during this time in someone's life. To be able to support someone in identifying their 'why' and then help them make the most of their work towards it is intensely rewarding. Working with Transfer Students is increasingly special, because making the decision to transfer is big - I love helping a student capitalize on this decision.
What’s one thing you wish every transfer student knew?
While I was not a transfer student, I tell folks that I consider myself a "transfer professional." Doing the "same thing" (being a student) somewhere else can feel like an entirely new thing! I wish transfer students knew that it was okay to feel like you're starting at the beginning again. While it might not be your first college class ever, it is still your first college class here. Embrace the newness and ask for help when you need it.
What’s something you learned in college that still sticks with you today?
Not everything you do has to lead to a bigger goal. Say yes to the opportunities that you're interested in! Regardless of if you see it applying to your major or future career, those experiences are priceless. You never know what you'll end up actually using years down the line!
What’s your favorite spot on or near campus?
402 Creamery has got to be my #1 destination in Lincoln right now. They have a location at Telegraph, and their monthly flavor rotation is incredible. I still think about their Tiger Stripes flavor from August... P.S. Always say yes to the waffle chip!
