Marissa Mendez is a first-place winner at the post level of the VFW Voice of Democracy scholarship! She has received $300 scholarship money, a certificate, and a medal as her awards. The VFW Voice of Democracy judges applicants from their audio submissions answering the following prompt: “Is our country what the founding fathers envisioned?”.

Mendez says she had previously applied as an 8th grader and with the help of her 9th-grade History teacher, she won at the middle school level. The Voice of Democracy competition provides high school students with the opportunity to speak out on freedom and democracy and the program has been popular and successful since 1947. The Voice of Democracy is a worldwide audio-essay competition that requires entrants to write and record a three to five-minute essay on a patriotic-based theme.

“I got a letter in mid-November telling me that I won. I was super excited when I found out and immediately emailed my 8th-grade teacher”, Mendez says.

She adds that she wishes to apply again next year in hopes to move to the national level. Congratulations Marissa, we admire your hard work and focus!
