Husker Connect: Projects

Talking with professionals about their career path or experience working in a particular industry can be one of the best ways to gain information to help you make career decisions. Utilize Husker Connect to search for and reach out to alumni within the platform. Projects is Husker Connect’s newest feature, allowing alumni to submit educational and meaningful work experiences for students to complete.

How do I find alumni?

After clicking on “Explore the Community”, find recommended alumni for you, or use the filter option in the top toolbar. When you find alumni you want to connect with, send them a message through the platform. Don’t forget to use the built-in scheduling and video features before you hit send on your message.

Do you know about the discussion board?

Ask a question on the main Husker Connect discussion board or College of Business group discussion board to get feedback from any user. This strategy can be helpful when asking for general advice.

What is a project?

Projects are short-term experiences created to explore career paths, or gain technical or transferable skills. The experience should be between 10-40 hours and last between two to six weeks after kick-off. Projects are not internships or job shadow opportunities, and may be paid or unpaid.

How can I view project opportunities?

Log into Husker Connect. If you have not previously set up your account, you will need to go through the registration process. Click on the Projects tab. Users will see available projects, and clicking on the title will provide a description, time duration, and compensation information.

Who posts the projects?

Projects are posted by alumni or college partners and then reviewed and approved by UNL staff. Regularly check Husker Connect for more opportunities as projects can be posted at any time. Students should contact the project poster via Husker Connect if they have questions about the position description or expectations.

Can international students be paid?

International students should contact the International Student and Scholar Office (ISSO) before accepting payment. Accepting payment may be in conflict with student visa requirements.

After accepting a project, how can I be successful?

You should meet with the person overseeing the project right away to learn more about the project and organization. Ask what is expected of you, what resources are available, and preferred forms of communication (example: email, video conference, phone, text message). After learning more about the project and expectations, additional training on software programs may be needed. Remember to use professional communication etiquette. Asking for feedback throughout the project is encouraged and a valuable learning experience.
