As the sun starts to shine and you can finally relax a bit, you might think it is too late to find an internship. Not true! There are still hundreds of internships listed in Handshake covering a wide range of roles and industries. And internships continue to be added daily as employers may not have participated in their traditional college recruiting and are now able to hire interns. There are also a good number of remote internships which offer the flexibility to gain experience without relocating or might make it easier to continue to work another part-time job. Take some time to update your Handshake profile with any new experiences, skills, and involvement. Upload your latest resume and then start applying.
Although Handshake will be your primary resource for internships, also update your LinkedIn profile and search for internships there. Some of my other favorite sites to look for internships are the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands, CareerLink, Idealist, and Chegg internships. In addition to internships, you may also be able to find career-related part-time jobs or volunteer positions, all of which help with your goals to gain experience.
If you already have a summer job and it isn’t related to your career goals, that’s okay. But use the opportunity to strengthen transferrable skills. The management major working as a lifeguard might offer to develop the staffing schedule. The supply chain major working in landscaping might meet with a manager to learn about how supplies are ordered, allocated to sites, and accounted for along the way. The marketing major working in a restaurant could provide some insight into social media and web presence to enhance sales. Look at your current role and see what skills you can gain.
The Business Career Center is here for you if you’d like to discuss opportunities and ideas on how to gain experience this summer. Use MyPLAN to schedule a virtual or in-person meeting or stop by drop-ins each weekday from 1-4. Have a great summer!
