Looking for Opportunities in your Hometown?

You’ve enjoyed living in Lincoln for college but a part of you wants to move “back home.” That doesn’t mean you’ll move in with your parents (although some people do during this transition), but it does mean that you like the environment where you grew up. The wonderful thing about being a business major is that employers in every industry and geographic location need business majors. Here’s some ideas to explore opportunities in your hometown.

Search for your local chamber of commerce, economic development, or tourism office. Who do they mention as top, growing, or unique employers?

Look for young professional groups or young regional award winners. Where do they work? What do they do? You might find posts on LinkedIn or other social media, especially those attached to the local chamber of commerce.

Google search “top employers in [insert home town],” you might be surprised to see some of the employers you didn’t even know existed. Or you may not have thought about employers like the local hospital, bank, or manufacturing facility, all who need business majors.

Ask your network – those neighbors, parents of your friends, coaches, etc. about who they see as potential employers.

Now you have a list of possibilities, take the next step and look for their websites and perhaps see if you could connect with someone on LinkedIn or via email. Often, they are excited to see talented people interested in returning to that community and can help make other introductions to help in your search. This list and a stronger network may also help if you choose to live somewhere else with the goal of moving back home a few years in the future. Maintain those ties and look forward to being welcomed back!
