Ever wonder why there is an employer standing at a table in the CBA Atrium? Have you ever stopped to speak with an employer at the table? Afraid to stop and chat? Fear not! The employers will not bite. Here are some tips for making the most of those employer booths.
Purpose: Employers set up booths in the Atrium simply to educate you, the student, about their company and what opportunities they have to offer. Some employers even have some giveaways if you are brave enough to stop by. Keep in mind that employers are not trying to sell you anything and you have no obligation to apply or interview for their positions simply by talking to them for a few minutes.
Why should you utilize the booths?
Networking! It never hurts to stop and chat. The employers are here to TALK to you, so talk to them. The more people you know, the better off you will be when you start looking for a job.
Tips:
1. Watch the screens around the building and this newsletter. We will let you know which employers will be coming to set up a booth in advance.
2. Smile. It does not matter if you are wearing sweatpants and just waiting outside a classroom for an exam. The booth is not a career fair, so they do not expect you to be in a suit, but a smile and a handshake can go a long way.
3. Ask them if they are alumni of UNL. It is an easy conversation starter and most of them ARE alumni! If you are unaware of what the company is, just ask, "So what does XYZ company do?" They are here to educate you and it is best for you to know all your options when job searching.
4. If you are interested in the company, grab a business card and follow up by sending them a copy of your resume. This one informal meeting could turn into an internship or job opportunity!
