Hard drives, file sizes and mobility usage have grown and so has the need for expanded data backup storage capabilities. NSave, UNL’s desktop backup service, recently moved to a cloud environment featuring unlimited data backup for up to 4 devices per account. Laptops, desktops, tablets and mobile devices can all be backed up via a single account. All file types are now included.

NSave has been using CrashPlan by Code42 to provide desktop backups since 2012. When CrashPlan PROe was offered as an Internet2 Net+ service with unlimited storage, the choice for UNL was clear.

“We discovered the CrashPlan software had an option of a private cloud environment that offered unlimited storage for a reasonable price,” says Linda Holsclaw, NSave service manager. “This was the perfect opportunity to give users the ability to backup all files from each of their devices and still keep the cost affordable with a software we found to be robust and user friendly.”

UNL migrated all accounts and the database to the CrashPlan data center in November. Backups are no longer stored locally on campus. All data is transmitted securely over Internet2 lines. “Moving this storage off campus and out of state has greatly improved our ability to recover in the event of a disaster impacting the campus,” added Holsclaw.

The campus is invited to learn more about CrashPlan’s capabilities and functions by attending a information session on February 12, 10:00 a.m. in the Nebraska Union. Mike Fraser from Code 42 will lead the session and be available for questions.
