Protection service enabled against phishing emails

UNL is evaluating a phishing email prevention service enabled on all Office 365 email. Microsoft is providing UNL with early access to its Advanced Threat Protection service. The service protects end-users from viruses and phishing attacks by comparing file attachment types and links within emails against a database of known malware and malicious websites.

If an individual clicks on a link to a known fraudulent or malicious website, the “Safe Links” component prevents access and redirects them to a Microsoft warning screen. “Safe Attachments” will run executable attachments in a Microsoft secure environment. If the attachment is malware, the recipient will receive the email, but the attachment will be blocked.

UNL Information Technology Services is asking for feedback on any issues you encounter during this evaluation period. Individuals may request legitimate web domains be “white-listed” for any sites the service inadvertently misidentifies and blocks.

This service is only active on UNL Office 365 email. The ITS security team reminds everyone to always use caution with any email service when opening email attachments and clicking on email links.
