Advisors Wanted: We Want You to be an RSO Advisor!

We Want You!
We Want You!

Student Leadership Involvement and Community Engagement (SLICE) needs faculty and staff members who are willing to serve as advisors for our Recognized Student Organizations (RSO’s).

Students start around 40-50 new RSOs a year and each new club needs an advisor before they can be officially approved by the university and can function as an active club on campus. Some clubs have advisor vacancies are various time throughout the year due to the former advisor retiring, relocating, or other circumstances that prevent them from continuing as an advisor to an RSO.

Our office hopes to assist RSOs in filling their advisor vacancies by building a list of potential advisors that RSOs can reach out to when they need of an advisor. If you are even slightly interested or know someone who would be great RSO advisor, fill out the following form. This form serves as an interest form and NOT as a commitment that requires you, or the person you nominate, to serve as an advisor for an RSO. Completing this form just lets us know that you would be open to having conversation with an RSO.

When RSOs contact SLICE regarding their need for an advisor, SLICE will provide the RSO with a list of advisors that they can contact. It is the RSO’s responsibility to reach out to you about potentially serving as their advisor. Once an RSO reaches out to you, your role would be to schedule a time to meet with the students and learn about the RSO to determine if you would be a good fit as their advisor. Before this meeting SLICE can provide you with a list of questions that you can ask the students to learn more about your potential role as an advisor for their RSO. During this meeting you can also share with the students your expectations and the level of commitment that you are able to provide to the group if you decide to be their advisor.

After you have meet with the group, take some time to think about your decision. There is no pressure to be an advisor just because you have met with a group of students. If you realize that you are not going to be a good fit as their advisor, just communicate this to the RSO. If you are a good fit for the RSO, let the students know that you are willing to be their New Advisor!

If you decide to serve as an RSO advisor, we have a plethora of resources to ensure that you are successful in your new role. We have an advisor annual orientation, and advisor manual, and an entire library of resources to assist in onboarding you to your new role.

If you have any questions about being an advisor for an RSO feel free to reach out to Joe Hagerty (jhagerty2@unl.edu) or Kat Grier (kathryn.grier@unl.edu)

Thank you for your consideration of this request and faithfully serving UNL Students!
