Summer intern - Center for Grasslands Studies

Requirements – Currently enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska. Major in Grassland Systems or Minor in Grazing Livestock Systems or Grassland Ecology and Management is preferred but not required. Valid driver’s license required.

Location – UNL Barta Brothers Ranch near Rose, NE 68714

Description – The Center for Grassland Studies is looking for an undergraduate intern to assist with land management and research activities for the Summer 2024 field season at UNL’s Barta Brothers Ranch (BBR). The BBR is roughly 6,000 acres of upland range located in the eastern Nebraska Sandhills. The primary responsibilities of the summer intern would be to assist with day-to-day tasks at the ranch as well as be involved with some of the larger-scale research projects occurring on site. Day-to-day tasks include fixing fence, spraying noxious weeds, and clearing eastern redcedar trees. Interns will have access to ATV’s and University fleet vehicles for necessary tasks across the ranch. Experience helps, but training can occur for highly motivated candidates. Interns will report to the Research Project Coordinator on-site for tasks and training of equipment use and pesticide handling. Research activities on the ranch can include plant and bird identification, data collection, and laboratory time. These research activities will change throughout the summer and training will be supplied for each new protocol. It is important that the intern is available to assist with data collection during peak research periods during the summer (mid-June and mid-August). Interns have the option of developing their own research project during the summer and registering for the course GRAS398R “Research Experiences in Grasslands” during the subsequent academic year. Applicants for this position must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska. A typical work week would be 40 hours Mon-Fri, with occasional longer days as needed.

Start – May 1 – May 15 (flexible)
End – August 15 – September 1 (flexible)

Compensation – Up to $15 per hour (dependent on prior experience)

Housing – provided at the Barta Brothers Ranch headquarters building
