Lessons on Cover Crops

Graduate students Rhianna Phipps (left) and Samundra Sigdel dig up their radish cover crops during Cover Crops in Agroecosystems class on East Campus in October. In the measuring cup are radish roots. The radish cover crops they selected typically grow well in the fall window during which the class conducts the challenge from early September through mid-October.

The students take measurements and observations from their self-selected cover crop mixtures in an activity for the cover crop challenge competition. They measure the amount of root and belowground biomass taken from an area within their experimental plots.

The course explores the management, environmental, economic and social considerations of cover crops across diverse agriculture production systems and regions and is taught by Andrea Basche and Sam Wortman, both associate professors in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture.
