Tom Clemente, Eugene W. Price Distinguished Professor of Biotechnology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, has been recently honored with the Crop Science Research Award from the Crop Science Society of America. This award is presented to researchers in recognition of outstanding contributions in crop science.
Clemente will be formally presented with the award at the CSSA awards ceremony on Oct. 23 during the scientific society’s Annual Meeting in Tampa, Florida, with the ceremony held at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel.
A professor of agronomy and horticulture, Clemente, and his program have contributed to 69 peer-reviewed publications, six patents and six book chapters. His program has aided in the scientific training of many individuals, both domestic and international, including 22 graduate students and 11 postdoctoral associates.
Clemente’s research interests are in developing tools for functional genomics and implementing genetic engineering for plant germplasm enhancement targeting value added and disease control traits.
According to Clemente, his research has been enriched through collaborative projects that have brought together multidisciplinary approaches to address the challenges facing agriculture. Clemente said his interactions with farmers and agriculture groups has broadened his understanding of what is required to maintain a plentiful and safe food supply.
Clemente received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Science in plant pathology from Oklahoma State University, a doctorate in plant pathology from North Carolina State University and postdoctoral training at Monsanto Company, prior to starting his career at Nebraska.
