Weekly Sit Down and Write sessions are a social writing time for students and postdocs of all disciplines. Sessions are held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. each Tuesday in Room 385, Plant Sciences Hall on East Campus.

During the two-hour session, students and postdocs have four mini-blocks of focused, timed writing with short breaks between blocks. Sessions begin with goal-setting and end with a report.

“These sessions are a great chance to get out of your normal environment for some focused writing time and feel the boost that comes from the creative energy of other writers,” Associate Professor Brian Waters said.

Waters, who opened the Scientific Writing Lab Studio a year ago, believes graduate students and postdocs always have something to write. “It may be making notes and connections between papers you are reading, drafting a project proposal, or outlining your next paper, but there is always something to write,” he said.

Waters also holds professional skills workshops such as career development planning and marketing for scientists at the writing lab studio.

Participants should bring a laptop and a mug for coffee or tea.
