The Department of Agronomy and Horticulture is hosting a special seminar at 1 p.m. March 29 in Keim Hall, Room 150 or it can be watched online. Guest speaker Eileen McLellan, a senior scientist with the Environmental Defense Fund, will discuss "Nitrogen balance as a sustainability metric in the food supply chain."
Food retailers and manufacturers are increasingly pressured to demonstrate the sustainability of the food they sell, and this translates to pressure on farmers to improve nitrogen (N) management. How can farmers gain insights into their N management performance and report on resulting improvements in a way that aligns with companies’ goals for reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved water quality?
This seminar will focus on the role that N balance can play in answering this question, and describe the work that Environmental Defense Fund is doing to test the value of the N balance metric to farmers and food companies.
