Enteric pathogens are prevalent in human waste streams (HWSs) and pose
significant challenges to the protection of public health and environmental
quality. The factors that control the fate of enteric pathogens and indicator organisms (PIOs) under ambient conditions are not well understood. In the developed world, this lack of knowledge limits our ability to advance the development of a sustainable water infrastructure for direct and indirect water reuse and beneficial reuse of wastewater treatment solids. It also hinders efforts to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services and systems in the developing world.
