Are you looking for something that will give you an edge in the job market? Are you looking for a 1 credit course to complete your Calc II supplement requirement? Do you want to make your work as a civil engineer more sustainable? If you answered “yes” to any of these, the course for you is CIVE 491 – Infrastructure Sustainability! (It is a 1 credit course although it may look like a 3 credit course in MyRed.) If you are an Omaha student and you are interested in this course, you can register by completing an intercampus transfer form as this course is offered in the Lincoln campus 3 week session only.
In CIVE 491 – Infrastructure Sustainability, you’ll learn about and work with the Envision sustainability rating system that evaluates infrastructure projects for how sustainable they are. You can think of Envision as being similar to the LEED building rating system but for infrastructure projects.
CIVE 491 – Infrastructure Sustainability is offered in the 3-week Spring 2020 term as an asynchronous course. This format will provide as much flexibility as possible to students. The plan for work related to the course is about 1 hour of online material each day and about another 1 to 2 hours of work beyond the online activities each day. That makes this 1 credit course equivalent over a 3 week period to a 1 credit course, like CIVE112, that meets once a week for 15 weeks.
We’ll spend roughly the first half of the course working through the Envision rating process with the goal of having everyone in the course pass the ENV SP (Envision Specialist) credentialing exam during the 2nd week. For the rest of the course, we’ll be working in small groups to apply what we’ve learned by using the Envision rating system on real projects. We’re currently working with local firms (HDR, Lamp Rynearson, Olsson, etc.) to identify a few projects for us to rate. Additionally, we have a couple of other service type projects that we will also be able to use for rating using Envision. By the end of the 3-week course, the expectation is that all students will have passed the ENV SP credentialing exam and will have experience using the Envision rating system on real projects.
