Abstract: Full-scale and accelerated pavement testing (FS/APT) began in the early 1900. Various facilities have been
developed and used worldwide to determine pavement responses and performance using known loading, well characterized materials and known environmental conditions under accumulation of damage over time. Sometimes
these activities are conducted in a compressed period. The purpose of this presentation is to share results and
experience of research projects led by Dr. Fabricio Leiva on FS/APT. An introduction to FS/APT will include experience
from Accelerated Pavement Testing program establish in 2012 at University of Costa Rica which may objective was to
create a preliminary mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide for Costa Rica. Results and discussion of a case
study conducted in Colorado, US will demonstrate typical applications of full scale testing for verification and
calibration process of the existing AASHTO mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide. Finally, a few examples of
other studies conducted an the NCAT Test Track will provide wider idea of research that can be conducted with FS/
APT.
Bio: Dr. Leiva is an Assistant Research Professor at NCAT-Auburn University. Dr. Leiva has 18 years of experience in
laboratory characterization of asphalt binders and mixtures and pavement condition evaluation. He received his M.S.
and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Auburn University. His research expertise includes sustainable pavement materials,
advanced asphalt materials characterization, accelerated pavement testing and instrumentation, pavement condition
evaluation and pavement construction. He has over 70 publications in journals and peer reviewed conference papers to date. Dr. Leiva is also collaborating in several research projects sponsored by NCHRP, FHWA, FAA, NAPA, and state
DOTs. As a lecturer, Dr. Leiva was able to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses. Outside of academic
positions, Dr. Leiva has industry experience (Granite Construction Inc.) performing quality control of roadway
construction materials, mostly asphalt mixtures. Dr. Leiva has also participated in pavement design projects and nondestructive pavement evaluation projects in different countries in Central America as consultant. Dr. Leiva is a
registered Professional Engineer in the state of Texas.
