Engineering Pathways Mentor

Description of Work:

The Nebraska 4-H Youth Development program is assisting Beyond School Bells with the Engineering Pathways program. This program consists of a series of interconnected elementary and middle school engineering clubs in rural afterschool settings around the state of Nebraska. It brings together engineering undergraduates to virtually support local high school-aged afterschool programming facilitators in developing and delivering Engineering Pathways curriculum and to provide the local high school-aged facilitators with educational and career pathway mentorship. As an Engineering Pathways mentor in this program, you will:

· Lead small online communities of high school-aged facilitators in weekly meetings, supporting these youth in developing their instructional skills, particularly in the areas of science and engineering.

o Support Program Instructors with understanding STEM content material, with a focus on the engineering mindset.

· Participate in training and professional development opportunities to ensure a quality program for you, the afterschool facilitators, and the youth program participants.

· Conduct training for the high-school facilitators via zoom to train them on how to teach select lessons in the curriculum and to provide them with mentorship around engineering educational and career pathways.

· Participate in weekly meetings with other Mentors and the Project Lead to give updates on their trainings/meetings with the high school facilitators

What will you get out of it?

Engineering Pathways Mentors will learn how to lead engaging online meetings with high school-aged youth while learning about high-quality STEM teaching practices. This is an opportunity to not only develop your own STEM knowledge and teaching skills, but to build relationships with peers in related fields; you will serve as a mentor for high school students, introducing them to possible careers in STEM fields or STEM education. This is also an opportunity to make your resume stand out with an experience that illustrates you can communicate, care for others, and take on a leadership role.

Required Qualifications:

Engineering Pathways Mentors must be 18 years old or older and have a desire to work with high school-aged youth. The position pays $15/hour with an anticipated time commitment of approximately 30-35 hours during the spring semester (January-April). Engineering Pathway Mentors must be able to devote time each week (some evenings/weekends) to prepare and lead the high school facilitator meetings online, and to familiarize themselves with the curriculum.

Note: This position is remote after initial training on UNL East Campus. You will need to be able to attend 1-2 days of training in-person. The rest of your hours will be remote.

Preferable Qualifications:

Prior experience working with high school youth is advantageous, but not required.

Engineering majors are preferred, but STEM majors, science education majors, or those with prior experiences in STEM or STEM education are invited to apply.
