Abstract:
Many state DOTs, now including Nebraska, recognize the benefits of managing State highway culverts more efficiently via an inventory and inspection strategy. The NDOT Culvert Inventory and Management Program implements a new program and workflow within NDOT. The NDOT Culvert Inventory and Inspection Tool uses GIS and mobile devices to quantify an asset class never before quantified by the State and can track life cycle and material performance data. The tool builds a centralized database for highway culverts, providing quick access to size, type, material, condition, history, and maintenance activity.

The Culvert Inventory and Inspection Tool will help the State make informed decisions on culvert repairs and replacements before a critical condition affects traveler safety. It enables NDOT to effectively catalogue, inspect, and report the condition and status of culverts through any network-enabled or Wi-Fi-enabled device such as smart-phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.
